Join me in my efforts to support the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation!

The Totem Tour traverses two provinces important to my life today. My maternal Ancestors are the nêhiyawi (Cree)-âpihtawikosisân (Métis) people of manitow sâkâhikan (Lac Ste. Anne, Alberta). I remain deeply connected to this community through family connections, residency and work.
In 2009, I took up the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy at the University of British Columbia (UBC). While working at UBC, I am a guest in xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) territory – UBC’s Vancouver campus is located on the traditional, ancestral lands of hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking people.
I first visited Haida Gwaii in summer of 2011, when I was asked to teach a graduate course focused on place-based learning. That experience introduced me to the deep beauty and rich history of the land and its communities, and also to some very dedicated teachers working to improve the public education system in BC School District 50.
I am honoured to have the chance to return to Haida Gwaii to support this important Stollery Children’s Hospital initiative. The gift of the totem pole can contribute to enhancing the level of culturally competent care available to First Nation, Métis and Inuit children, and continues a long tradition of respectful exchange between Indigenous groups across the Canadian landscape.
